Consent, or Lack Thereof
If someone respects a sign in a museum that says “Do Not Touch”, why are women not awarded that same respect? This artwork is made up of two experimental typography posters that represent both consent and a lack of consent. The poster on the left is made out of yarn and represents an enthusiastic, willing partner. Towards the bottom right of this yarn poster, the visuals shift towards instead representing what happens when consent is disregarded. Here it leads to the stained glass poster on the right. The glass is meant to represent a very stern and serious “no” or lack of consent. Both of these posters feature data visualization about consent and sexual assault. Hidden within each of the designs are shapes that act to inform the viewer of these alarming statistics and the importance of the topics at hand. To see where this data lies in each poster and what it represents, there is a guidebook that explains and shows each data point.

As viewers engage with this artwork, they are also asked to participate in a scenario of consent themselves. Viewers are free to touch the poster made of yarn; it says it’s okay. They are not, however, under any circumstances, allowed to touch the glass poster. It says not to.

The Process
I had never done either of these mediums prior to this project. It was a massive undertaking and an unbelievable amount of work to be done in just a little over a month. But I did it! And it was documented beautifully by my friend Chrisna Ngin.
